How should you winterize your hot tub? Here's some tips and ideas on how to protect spas and hot tubs from the frigid winter weather.

The benefit to shutting down the hot tub is that you only have to worry about the hot tub once in the season. The other alternative is to leave the hot tub turned on for the winter. The upside of this is that you can use your hot tub throughout the winter months. Buy your spa supplies from a discount hot tub supply in order to save money and keep your spa cover on at all times when not in use.

Whether or not you winterize your hot tub is really up to you. Take care of your hot tub by protecting important parts such as the plumbing, fittings and filter.

Improper draining or winterizing will result in spa damage.

If your hot tub has a freeze protection system, activate it and keep the heat settings a little higher than the minimum amount. If it has a timer/auto heat mode selector, set it to the auto heat mode to prevent freezing.

If you're closing your hot tub, clean it with a degreaser to remove oils left by skin and bath products. Next, clean the vents and filters. Remove the cartridge filter from the skimmer. Wipe the skimmer entrance with a cloth soaked in filter cleaner. If the hot tub is no longer filled with water, use a vacuum to remove remaining water and reinsert the filter cartridge into the skimmer. Finally, clean the surfaces of the hot tub with a non-abrasive polish.
